Facilities, services and support available for neurodiverse students

Just like any busy space, we understand that the LRCs can feel overwhelming if you are neurodiverse. This guide highlights services that may help make your experience more comfortable. If you need any further support, please contact us – we are here to help.

Before You Arrive

  • Check how busy the LRCs are before you visit using the the Herts Mobile app. In the app, select Plan Your Visit and then view live data and daily trends.
  • Disabled parking is available directly outside College Lane LRC and near DeHavilland LRC.
  • For accessible journey planning, including venue access and LRC space information, visit the University of Hertfordshire Accessibility Guide on the AccessAble website and app.

Using the Space

  • Quiet and silent study spaces are available.
  • Bookable group study rooms offer adjustable lighting to suit your needs.
  • Large monitors can be connected to your laptop, with access to guides for both LRCs.
  • PC and Mac users can adjust mouse settings and text size.
  • Reading for Pleasure resources are available to support wellbeing.

Accessing Resources

  • Chromebook loans can be used anywhere on campus, allowing you to work wherever you feel most comfortable
  • Book reservations- reserve a book via our Online Library and pick it up from the reservation shelves on the ground floor of your selected LRC. 
  • Convert documents into accessible formats with SensusAccess.
  • The Sensory lending collection is available to help manage anxiety and stimulate the senses in a calming way.
  • Use the book retrieval service for easy access to resources.
  • Request a scan: If an electronic version of a book is unavailable, request a scanned copy of a chapter from a physical book in our collection.
  • The Library Catalogue point is situated on the ground floor for easy access.
  • Accessibility software is installed on all PCs and Macs, including text-to-speech and voice typing tools.
  • Read aloud tools are available on eBooks and Microsoft 365 applications.
  • External eBooks conform to accessibility standards (functionality may vary).
  • Accessible copies (e.g., printed, PDFs, screen reader-friendly) can be requested based on individual needs.

Safety and Security

  • The LRC Security team is available 24/7 for any concerns during your visit.
  • Emergency refuge points are located on all floors.

Support

  • Library staff are available at the welcome desk to assist with accessing services.
  • Accessible information points are located on all floors, with PCs and phones connecting directly to the Helpdesk.
  • In-person IT appointments are bookable in advance. Please contact the Helpdesk.
  • Study Success Hubs offer drop-in study skills support during term time, including help with digital platforms, assignments, and assessments. Sessions cover Digital Skills, Library Skills, Academic English, and Maths.
  • The Library SkillUP Canvas module provides guides, videos, and tips to help you get started, with online chat available on weekdays for 1-to-1 support.
