Understanding Mental Health - Training and Awareness

Student wellbeing are very proud and fortunate to have collaborated with Hertfordshire Mind Network who will be delivering a series of bookable workshops open to staff and students.

If you would like to attend one or all of the sessions they are running on alternate Wednesdays at 2pm during term time, lasting between 1.5 and 2 hours dependant on the session. Sessions are delivered online via Teams. There is no limit to the number of sessions you can attend.

Emotional Wellbeing and Coping Strategies

This workshop aims to provide attendees with an introduction to mental health and wellbeing – outlining what positive mental health might look like and when we can develop problems. This practical and interactive session will give attendees a chance to explore what they can do to help make people better manage their mental health and wellbeing, using a more preventative approach. The session will use the 5 Ways to Wellbeing framework to explore a range of techniques for promoting positive wellbeing and practical strategies of how to achieve this.

This workshop aims to cover:

  • Understand what positive wellbeing and the important of utilising preventative techniques to maintain good mental health.
  • Have awareness of practical strategies for maintaining positive mental health based on the 5 ways to wellbeing framework.
  • Know how to develop personal wellbeing action plans detailing how to maintain good mental health.
  • Be able to provide individual’s you support with practical self-management strategies.

Reducing Isolation, Social Anxiety & Building Better Relationships

It is estimated that somewhere between 6% and 13% of the UK population often feel lonely and this has a devastating impact on physical and mental health.

This workshop will explore the differences between loneliness and isolation and its causes and impact. Attendees will also learn where to find support and be able to develop practical tools they can implement to combat loneliness and isolation. This workshop will also explore what social anxiety is, its impact and how to develop tools to manage it.

What it will cover:

  • What is loneliness and social anxiety.
  • What causes and impacts loneliness.
  • How to overcome social anxiety and meet others.
  • Practical tips to challenge loneliness and isolation.

Supporting an Individual in a Mental Health Crisis

The session will provide crisis intervention training for helping those individuals with mental needs that are experiencing a crisis. This session will provide evidenced strategies for effective brief intervention and de-escalation. The session will also briefly cover risk assessment and management for when managing high stress situations.

The training aims to cover:

  • What a mental health crisis looks like including, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, psychosis, drug and alcohol, panic attacks and more.
  • Know how to engage effectively with an individual in crisis and communicate appropriately to support in positively managing the situation.
  • Have improved skills to de-escalate crisis situations.
  • Know how to help individuals determine positive coping strategies and develop a management plan.
  • Have an awareness of the range of services and interventions available for those experiencing a crisis.
  • Have a better understanding and confidence in managing endings and exits.

Reducing Study Stress (Managing Study Stress & Burnout)

The aim of this training is to improve participant’s stress management and support individuals to become more resilient. Participants will develop greater awareness of stress and gain personal stress management abilities to help deal with exam stress and other day-to-day stressors.

What it will cover:

  • Be able to recognise stress, understand its impact, consider how much stress is too much stress and be aware of how to recognise personal stressors.
  • Assess your own resilience and personal strengths
  • Know how to take appropriate action in response to stress, lessening the risk of stress having an adverse effect on emotional health and general wellbeing.
  • Develop positive responses to situations that cannot be changed and strategies to prevent feeling overwhelmed.
  • Understand how to stand up to stress and how to see it as an opportunity for personal growth, development and building resilience.

Spot The Signs Suicide Prevention

The aim of this training is to introduce the Spot the Signs campaign, raise awareness of suicide and provide practical steps to help attendees feel more confident in recognising and responding to those affected by suicide.

By the end of this training it is expected that you will:

  • Gain a broader understanding of people who are experiencing suicidal thoughts and those who may be more at risk.
  • Feel more confident to spot the signs and ask questions to be able to identify those who may be at risk.
  • Have signposting information and an overview of services available locally.
  • Understand the importance of self-care in a supporting role.

Managing Anxiety & Panic

Anxiety is one of the most common mental health conditions in the world. We all experience anxiety symptoms from time-to-time and it can be incredibly frightening and difficult to manage. We offer training on a variety of anxiety conditions such as, Generalised anxiety, Social Anxiety, Panic Attacks and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. This is a general workshop for anyone who would like to better understand anxiety, how it affects them and how to manage it.

This workshop aims to:

  • Identify what anxiety is, how it affects us and what causes it.
  • Illustrate the relationship between thoughts, behaviour and physical symptoms of anxiety.
  • Learn to challenge unhelpful thoughts and adapt your behaviour in anxiety provoking situations.
  • Identify strategies and techniques to overcome and manage anxiety.

Understanding Autism, ADHD & Neurodiversity

Neurodiversity is an essential form of human diversity and broad term describing the idea that people experience and interact with the world around them in many different ways. Our training recognises neurodiversity not as deficits, but as differences. This training aims to provide attendees with an overview of neurodiversity-related conditions such as Autism, ADHD and others and how to practically support individuals.

The training aims to:

  • To increase and develop your awareness of what we mean by the words ‘autism’, ‘ADHD’ ‘neurodiversity’ and the ‘spectrum’.
  • To support you in understanding and identifying variations of the different traits, characteristics and behaviours displayed by individuals with autism and ADHD.
  • To describe some of the common difficulties faced by autistic people in childhood and later life, such as the comorbidity of mental health conditions.
  • To challenge common stereotypes and false misconceptions about autistic people.
  • To learn a number of practical ways you can support an individual with autism to fulfil their potential, by understanding, adjusting and communicating more effectively.

Understanding Self-Harm

Self-harm statistics appear to be on the increase, year on year; affecting people of all ages, genders and backgrounds. This session provides a comprehensive overview and aims to educate professionals and volunteers using both lived experience and professional background, as well as signposting to other resources and agencies.

This workshop aims to cover:

  • Increased knowledge as to how self-harm manifests itself and the reasons it is often instigated.
  • Be able to spot the warning signs, both physical and emotional.
  • Identify some of the reasons for self-harm and be aware of the risks related.
  • Raise awareness of further support services, apps or websites that may be of assistance to you and others.

Building Assertiveness & Confidence

This workshop will explore the difference between assertiveness and other communication styles. The aim of the workshop is to develop attendees’ ability to speak in an assertive and confident way.

What it will cover:

  • Exploring different types of communication styles.
  • Definition, beliefs, motivations, appearance and results of different communication styles.
  • How to be more assertive.
  • Practical tips

Sleeping Well

We spend about a third of our lives asleep. It is as important to our bodies as eating, drinking and breathing, and is vital for maintaining good mental and physical health. Sleeping helps us to recover from mental as well as physical exertion. This course is for anyone who would like to improve the quality of their sleep by making some changes in the areas of Health, Environment, Attitude and Lifestyle.

What it will cover:

  • Understand the importance of good quality sleep and its impact on physical and mental health.
  • Explore how Health, Environment, Attitude and Lifestyle impact the quality of sleep.
  • Examine how negative thoughts around sleep can impact its quality.
  • Set goals to make positive changes in these areas to improve the overall quality of sleep.
