Frequently Asked Questions in relation to formal examinations

When will I be able to access or view my timetable?

Students will usually be emailed at least 4 weeks before the exams to announce that their exam timetable is ready to view except for the referred/deferred examinations which will be sent out a week before the exam session. 

I have received an email about my timetable, but I am unable to see it on My StudyNet, what should I do?

You should have access to your exam timetable via your StudyNet homepage

If your exam timetable is appearing as blank, this is usually because you have not accessed the VPN. 

If you are experiencing technical difficulties accessing StudyNet, setting up or using the VPN, or viewing the timetable, you will need to contact the Library and Computer Services HelpDesk.

Where can I find the general timetable?

When live, the general exam timetable can be found on the Exam timetables & future exam sessions page. This will show all of the exams that will be sitting during the exam session. Students should use their personal timetable as found on their StudyNet in the first instance.

Why am I missing an exam from my timetable?

If you believe you are missing an exam on your timetable, please email exams@herts.ac.uk with the module titles you are expecting to sit so that we can check this.

I have an SNA and I believe that I have been scheduled into the wrong room, who do I contact?

If you believe that your SNA is not in place for your exam, please email exams@herts.ac.uk as soon as possible, including your student number and the exams that you are expecting to sit so that we can look into this.

The exams team will look into your enquiry and will be in touch once they have spoken to wellbeing about the provisions that should be in place for your exams.

Which calculators are approved for exams?

The approved makes & models of calculators for use in university exams (where permitted) are:

(all variants of the following models) - Casio fx-82, Casio fx-83, Casio fx-85, Casio fx-260, Casio fx-300 & Casio fx-991

For example:

- Casio fx82MS or Casio fx82WA are approved for use in university exams as they are variants of the Casio fx82 model.

 - Casio fx115MS would be confiscated in an exam because the Casio fx115 is not an approved model of calculator.

Please note, only Casio brand calculators are permitted. Any calculator in the above model that is not a Casio will be removed. 

How do I know if my calculator is university approved?

You can email a photo of your calculator asking whether it is approved directly to exams@herts.ac.uk

What happens if I have the wrong calculator for the exam?

You cannot share calculators during an exam, even if the student who was originally using the calculator has finished their exam.

The Exams office does not carry any spare calculators, so if the calculator is not an approved model you will need to complete the exam without the assistance of a calculator.

Where is my exam room?

Please check your timetable to see which campus your exam is on. We recommend that all students use the wayfinding app to help to find your exam rooms. We also recommend that you visit the campus beforehand and take a walkaround to ensure you are familiar with the route to the exam room.

I do not have an ID card, what should I do?

If you do not have an ID card, please go to the Ask Herts desks to request a temporary exam ID.

If you are already in your exam room, please alert an invigilator as soon as possible.

Would an electronic ID card be accepted for exams?

We will accept electronic ID cards if you have enough time to show this to the invigilator and then turn your electronic devices off and store it in the plastic box under your desk ready for the exam.

What happens if I am late for an exam?

We cannot admit late students to the exam room under any circumstances. The time is measured using the centralised digital clocks found across campus. The door will only be closed once this clock shows the start time of the exam (either 9.30 or 14.15.)

Late students on De Havilland campus should report to N212, late students on College Lane should report to B166 to collect a late slip from the Exam’s office.

The late slip does not permit you to enter the exam room and cannot be used as evidence for an Exceptional Circumstance.

If you have Exceptional Circumstances, you can find more information about what is considered an acceptable reason and the type of evidence you could provide here.

The Exam’s office cannot advise on this process or what happens next, they will only provide the late slip to show that you did make it onto site and attempt to attend your exam but were too late to do so. However, we do recommend you contact your module leader for further guidance.

What happens if I left an exam early due to illness?

You should have received ‘Leaving an exam early due to illness’ sheet from the Invigilator as you left your exam with details regarding exceptional circumstances.

As the Exams office does not manage this process, we are unable to advise on the turnaround time for these or what else you might need to do regarding your Exceptional Circumstance’s application.

Where can I find the University Exam Regulations?

You should familiarise yourself with the University exam rules and regulations, where a copy of the blue 'Instructions to Candidates' sheet can be found. You will also see this blue sheet on your desk when you enter the exam room.
